5 Healthy Breakfast Options to Start Your Morning Off Right

We’ve all probably heard the saying, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” While it sounds cliché, it’s actually true. After a good eight to nine hours of sleep, your body needs fuel to start the day off right. And if you want to avoid feeling sluggish, try these five healthy breakfast options that are sure to give you a much-needed energy boost in the morning!

1. Oatmeal

Oatmeal can be viewed as a healthy dish especially since instant versions tend to be full of sugar when they’re artificially flavored. But, cooking rolled oats instead is a better option as a complex carbohydrate that your body will digest slowly and make you feel fuller longer. Medical News Today says that over time regularly eating oats can improve digestion and help with weight management.

And you don’t have to eat it plain: Just a tablespoon of sugar or honey sweetens it without going overboard. Also, you can top it with raspberries or even sliced kiwi for a fresh and fruity twist!

2. Smoothies

Smoothies are one of the healthiest breakfast options out there because you can add fruits and vegetables to the drinks. Fruits like strawberries, bananas, and blueberries provide both natural sweetness and antioxidants for your body. Kale and spinach are two common leafy greens that can be blended into a green smoothie.

However, it’s best to blend them with other fruit such as kiwi or to balance out the flavor. And you can get creative by adding in other ingredients including coconut water or protein for an additional health boost.

If I’m craving a smoothie in the morning, I’ll typically use the ready-made blend kits from Blendtopia especially when I don’t have time to chop a bunch of fruit. My favorite blends are the Energy and Glow smoothie kits, which are available on their site and in select grocery stores. I love adding in yogurt, sea moss gel, orange juice, and honey before blending into a delicious and refreshing smoothie.

So you can never go wrong with a smoothie as a delicious and filling breakfast option.

3. Mini Frittatas

If you’re in a rush but still want a satisfying breakfast, make a batch of mini frittatas and keep them in the fridge to enjoy throughout the week. Think of this as a smaller version of an omelette that you can pack with your favorite fillings and bake in the oven. When you want to reheat them, microwave one at a time for 30 seconds to a minute or until it’s heated all the way through.

To make them at home follow the simple recipe posted on Eat Yourself Skinny blog, which is loaded with red bell peppers, Parmesan cheese, and zucchini. This is definitely a mouthwatering veggie combo for a quick breakfast on the go!

4. Avocado Toast

Beyond being a staple food that shows up on our Instagram feed, avocado toast can be considered one of the “breakfast of champions.” The experts at Healthline praise avocados for being loaded with fiber, heart-healthy fatty acids and antioxidants that are good for your vision. Slicing half an avocado and putting it on whole grain toast is the perfect way to get all of those health benefits in the morning. Plus, you can top it with two slices of tomatoes, a cooked egg or smoked salmon to make for an even more hearty breakfast!

5. Chia Seed Pudding

Similar to oatmeal, a bowl of chia seed pudding will satisfy your appetite until lunchtime. This is all thanks to chia seeds, which are full of omega-3 fatty acids that are great for heart and joint health. The best part is that chia seed pudding is super simple to make!

“Chia pudding is the easiest thing you can possibly make because the basic recipe has only two ingredients — chia seeds plus any kind of milk. And what’s easier than that?” Culbertson shares with Cleveland Clinic.

A simple recipe posted by Cleveland Clinic involves mixing two tablespoons of whole chia seeds with a 1/2 cup of milk in a small bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least three hours and up to overnight. Then, spoon into a bowl, top with your favorite fruit, and enjoy.

As you can see, these healthy breakfast options are easy to prepare on any day of the week. So there’s no excuse to skip this very important meal going forward!
